Tonight, when I tired of putting away Christmas decorations, I started trying to organize the built-in bookshelves in the great room.

It's HARD. This is all I accomplished before giving up for the night (obviously working from the top down):

And I think I'm going to take it all down and start over.

My favorite piece in that whole mess is the framed fall leaves, a gift from my college friend Andrea, who lived in Washington, D.C., back in 2001. After September 11, when the entire country was in shock and feeling deflated by the gravity of the tragedy that had befallen us, Andrea collected these fallen leaves, pressed them, and framed them for me:

It's one of my favorite pieces of art. I don't know if it'll stay in the great room forever -- I'd like to hang it in a more prominent spot in our bedroom -- but for now I love looking at it on the shelf. It's a sad reminder of a sad time, but also a wonderful reminder of a wonderful friend.
